The stand-up alphabet game is a fun activity for introducing or reviewing the lower-case alphabet and is suitable for higher grade Elementary and 1st grade Junior High classes. It gets the students thinking about the spacing and sizing of the letters.

Materials required[]

  • None - just a genki atmosphere!

Procedure[]

  • Draw the lower-case alphabet on the board between 3 lines, as shown.
Stand-up alphabet
  • Practise the standard alphabet song with the class so they can get used to the rhythm.
  • Now tell the kids they will sing the song again but with the following actions:
    • When a letter goes above the central line (b, d, f, h, k, l, t) they put their hands on their head
    • When it is sandwiched between the bottom two (a, c, e, i, m, n, o, r, s, u, v, w, x, z) they put their hands on their hips
    • When it goes below the bottom line (g, j, p, q, y) they touch the floor.
  • Start off slowly but make sure the kids sing along while they do the actions. Mistakes are funny so don't worry if they mess up.
