The JET Programme Japanese Language Courses are provided free of charge by the JET Programme (specifically, CLAIR). There are three courses (beginner, intermediate and advanced), each 6 months in length. There is also a more advanced translator/interpreter course available. Material is sent for each month to the participant with a test to be completed by the end of each month.

The course starts in November, with the first test due December 10 (for the 2009/2010 course). The beginner, intermediate and advanced courses are structured around regular deliverable tests. A minimum grade of 70 percent must be obtained on four out of six of the tests to pass the course.[1]

Important Notes[]

(from CLAIR)

If for some reason you miss a test submission deadline, you will still continue to receive the course materials as it is expected that you will continue to take the course to the very end, even if you submit your tests later. However, all six monthly tests must be submitted by the deadline for BOOK 6 (May 17, 2010) AND you must receive a score of 70 percent or higher in order for you to qualify for a Certificate of Completion.

Once you have applied for a language course and have been accepted, you are expected to honor your commitment to finishing the course. Persons who do not intend to finish the course are asked to refrain from applying. If you are unable to continue the course for unavoidable reasons, please contact the Help Line as soon as possi-ble.

Fun facts[]

All of these fun facts are taken from the 2009/2010 course guide.

  • All material is sent to your base school or BOE (or similar).
  • There are 6 books for each of the beginners/intermediate and advanced courses.
  • Each book has a monthly test
    • These are all multiple choice, except for books 3, 4 and 5 of the advanced course, which are short answers.
