Golden Week is one of the busiest holiday periods of the year in Japan. Four national holidays fall within seven days and people often take nenkyu on the work days falling in between to make up a full week off work. Hotels, trains and planes become very crowded and ticket prices can increase significantly.

The four national holidays are:

  • Showa Day (昭和の日 shōwa no hi?)
April 29th - the former Emperor's birthday
  • Constitution Day (憲法記念日 kenpō kinenbi?)
May 3rd - the anniversary of the post-war constitution
  • Green Day, or Nature Day (みどりの日 midori no hi?)
May 4th - dedicated to the environment and nature
  • Children's Day (こどもの日 kodomo no hi?)
May 5th - dedicated to children
